Education
Education is a core strategic theme of ActionAid International because it is a fundamental human right and is key to helping people lift themselves out of poverty. The links between illiteracy and poverty are proven and strong. Education is recognised as the responsibility of the State and is regarded as a core element of a development policy committed to social justice.
ActionAid’s vision for education is that all children will have free access to quality education within an equitable system.
Key aspects of our work in education
- Supporting excluded and disadvantaged groups (especially girls) in gaining access to quality education
- Promoting the rights of all learners within education systems
- Strengthening citizens’ participation in education governance
- Advocating for education policies that promote the right to education of all.
Another key component of ActionAid’s work on education is REFLECT. An innovative approach to literacy, adult learning and social change that was developed by ActionAid and now used by over 350 organizations in 60 countries.
ActionAid Ireland is currently supporting education programmes in Nepal and Vietnam. The focus of these programmes is primarily on increasing the participation of children, especially girls and children from ethnic minority groups, as well as improving the quality of education available.
Activities implemented through this programme include
- Training in teaching and school administration provided to teachers, school administrators and Parent Teacher’s Associations in Vietnam.
- REFLECT circles established in resettled communities in Vietnam. In the REFLECT circles, people are learning the basics of literacy as well as how to access information and services for their local communities.
- Training in teaching methodologies has been provided to primary school teachers in Nepal to improve the quality of education.
- Also in Nepal, School Management Committees and Parent Teacher Associations have been strengthened to facilitate improvements in school governance and management.
